We will be celebrating National Bookstart Week with a series of Bookstart Rhymetime and Storytime events across the Borough.
This year’s theme, Jungle Adventures, is based on Giles Andreae’s beloved picture book Rumble in the Jungle, which we will be giving away free at our events. There will be nursery rhymes, songs and craft activities and participants are asked to come along dressed as their favourite jungle animal and join in the fun.
National Bookstart Week is an annual celebration of Book Trust’s flagship reading programme, Bookstart. It aims to reinforce to families the importance of getting in to the habit of reading every day – even if it’s just for ten minutes. Events will include stories, rhymes and lots of fun activities to inspire families to read together.
Across the Wokingham Borough the following events will take place:
Rhymetime in the Park
Rhymetime in the Park takes place on Monday June 8 between 10am to 12noon at Dinton Pastures Play park.
Rhymetime will be at 10.15am and 11.15am with songs and rhymes. Families can create a lion mask, play dough animals, decorate some biscuits with the Children’s Centres and listen to jungle stories at the storytelling chair. Visitors can also find out about ‘communicating and your child’ from the council’s early years team, as well as sun safety and nutrition from the health visiting team and services offered by the Borough’s Children’s Centres and charity Homestart. Visitors will be able to collect a Bookstart goody bag along with a free Rumble in the Jungle book and other information on the day.

Cllr Pauline Jorgensen, executive member for resident services, said: “Throughout National Bookstart Week, we’ll be encouraging parents and children to read together on a daily basis. The events, activities and resources will help families to see the benefits of reading together every day. Research has shown reading to young children every day makes a huge difference in terms of their future confidence, communication skills, well-being and educational attainment.
“Our borough libraries offer an array of amazing books, ebooks, story and rhyme sessions and much more. They are always open to everyone.”
Under-fives library officer Claire Groves said: “Every little monkey deserves a story and a cuddle, so that’s why this June (8 to 14) UK charity Booktrust is calling for all parents and carers from across Wokingham Borough to perfect their loudest ape call and take their cheeky chimps to our Rhymetime in the Park to make some jungle-themed reading adventures.”
If families are unable to make it along to their local event they can join in the fun at home, with plenty of jungle-themed arts and crafts, games and baking recipes all on the Bookstart website.
