Baileys Women’s Prize for Fiction Prize Party – In celebration of women’s fiction and the prestigious Baileys prize, Wokingham Libraries will be hosting a party at Woodley Library, as the winner is announced, on Wednesday 3 June at 7pm. Library customers are invited to write a review of their favourite women’s novel and prizes will be available for the best reviews. Refreshments also available. Flamenco Performance – Join us for the live music and colourful dance of local flamenco group Flamenco Magica, who will be performing in the Wokingham Library Cafe on Saturday 6 June 11am to 12 noon. Free event, just drop-in.
Vintage Musical Cabaret with Singalong – Enjoy an afternoon of vintage music and fun inspired by the music of the early twentieth century. Entertainer Chanteuse Maria Hackemann is accompanied on piano by Geoff Hiscott for a journey of vintage music from Berlin cabaret to the American Jazz Age and more. Ann Nobbs-author visit Local author Ann Nobbs will be promoting her new book “One for Sorrow” at Woodley Library on Thursday 11 June 6pm to 7pm. Ann will be reading from her book and signing copies-refreshments will be available. Free event, no need to book, for information call (0118) 9690304

Sex, Love and Violence in the Middle Ages-with James Burge and Michael Jecks What do we really know about the lives of people in the past? How does a novelist go about imagining the private life of a medieval character? Each panellist gives a 15 minute talk about their own approach to these questions. James Burge is an award-winning TV director turned author of Heloise and Abelard and Dante’s Invention, Michael Jecks has been described as a master of the medieval whodunnit with his best-selling Templar series. Bookstart Week at Wokingham Borough Libraries from June 8 to 14 Rhymetime in the Park – takes place on Monday June 8 between 10am to 12noon at Dinton Pastures Play park. Rhymetime will be at 10.15am and 11.15am with songs and rhymes. Families can create a lion mask, play dough animals, decorate some biscuits with the Children’s Centres and listen to jungle stories at the storytelling chair. Visitors can also find out about ‘communicating and your child’ from the council’s early years team, as well as sun safety and nutrition from the health visiting team and services offered by the Borough’s Children’s Centres and charity Homestart. Visitors will be able to collect a Bookstart goody bag along with a free Rumble in the Jungle book and other information on the day.

Summer Reading Challenge – Young Volunteers Aged 16 to 24? Do you enjoy reading? Do you enjoy working with children and want to volunteer? Then helping with the Summer Reading Challenge in Wokingham Borough Libraries may be for you. We are looking for young people who can encourage children to take part in and complete this year’s Summer Reading Challenge, Record Breakers and help out with children’s activities in the library.
It’s fun and a great addition to your CV and you have the chance to give something back to your local community. The volunteering opportunities will be at Wokingham, Woodley and Lower Earley Libraries between Monday 27 July to Friday 28 August, 2015.
