Kate Greenaway Award Longlisted Books to explore

We are posting book reviews about all of the long listed books, let us know your thoughts on each of these amazing titles.

Footpath Flowers illustrated by Sydney Smith, written by Jon Arno Lawson

footpath flowersA little girl collects wild flowers while her distracted father pays her – and their surroundings – little attention. Each flower the little girl gathers becomes a gift for a person or animal, and whether the gift is noticed or ignored, both giver and recipient are transformed by their encounter.

The different perspectives are wonderful as you see the city through your eyes and the little girls. You focus your eye on all of the small things, just like the girl sees. This book reminds you that a small act of kindness can help spread joy and love to all.

Lili illustrated and written by Wen Dee Tan

liliLili finds it hard to make friends with her fiery red hair, but one day, Lili finds the village children lost in the deep dark woods and her bravery (and hair) leads them all home safely.

Wen Dee Tan uses the white space well and the different perspectives all add, to really highlight Lil’s flame red hair.

Lili is a beautiful story of overcoming rejection and being accepted for who you are – something that will resonate with children and adults everywhere.
