Apply to be a Summer Reading Challenge Young Volunteer before Thursday 23 June

Would you like to volunteer for the Summer Reading Challenge with Wokingham Borough Libraries?

  • Volunteers will run children’s craft activities to celebrate and promote the Summer Reading Challenge.
  • Talk to and encourage young readers and help with their choice of books.
  • Contribute to creating a display at the library.

This will be under the supervision of library staff, but volunteers will be expected to work on their own.

The Summer Reading Challenge is a national library scheme to encourage primary school age children (4-12 years) to keep reading through the summer holidays. Children are challenged to read 6 books and visit the library 3 times. The 2016 theme is The Big Friendly Read.

What we are looking for:

  • Volunteers aged 16 to 24 years.
  • Enthusiastic about reading
  • Enjoy talking to and helping children and families
  • Interested in craft activities
  • Reliable and able to make a regular commitment to the library
  • Able to arrange own transport to and from the library.

Times required: Monday 25 July to Friday 2 September 2016.   Morning (10.30am to 12.30pm) and afternoon (2pm to 4pm) sessions will be running each week at the following libraries:

  • Lower Earley Library: sessions on Tuesdays 2pm to 4pm and Thursdays 10.30am to 12.30pm.
  • Wokingham Library sessions on Mondays 2pm to 4pm and Wednesdays 10.30am to 12.30pm.
  • Woodley Library sessions be on Wednesdays 2pm to 4pm and Fridays 10.30am to 12.30pm.

We would like you to commit to attend at least 4 sessions (8 hours volunteering) during the 7 weeks, but the more sessions you can support the better. 

There may be opportunities to help with other children’s events at libraries. If you are interested in volunteering at another library in Wokingham borough (not listed above) please contact us, details below.

What you will do:

  • Set up and clear away craft activity. This may involve moving furniture to set up the space for the activity.
  • Welcome children and families
  •  Help young people with craft activities such as gluing and cutting
  • Promote the Summer Reading Challenge (including website, book review forms and activity sheets) and encourage children to complete the challenge.
  • Promote other Summer Reading Challenge events at libraries
  • Encourage young readers and talk to them about the books they are reading.

Help with their choice of books if required.

  • Share stories aloud
  • Contribute to creating a display at the library over the 7 weeks
  • Opportunity to generate content and activity ideas on Reading Hack website

Volunteers will receive full training before they start.  You will need to complete an application form as soon as possible.  The closing date for applications is Thursday 23 June 2016
