Author visit from Sarah Driver at Wokingham Schools

This slideshow requires JavaScript.

Last week, we had a visit from author Sarah Driver.

Sarah spoke to children from Farley Hill School and Gorse Ride Junior School, visited Willow House Education and Wokingham Library.

Sarah introduced the children to herself and her books. She talked about her inspiration, how she begins her research and methods of scrapbooking to start her stories.

Sarah then went onto talk about how she comes up with her characters.  The children then worked in small groups to come up with an animal namesake and use this to create a character in their own story, set on a ship – what would they have in their pockets, what could be happening to them.

Sarah really inspired the children to go away and write their own stories and encouraged free writing time.

sarah driver bioSarah Driver is a nurse and midwife and a graduate of the Bath Spa Writing for Young People MA, during which she won the Most Promising Writer prize in 2014. Sarah started writing stories as a small child and lists her influences as Spellhorn by Berlie Doherty, A Necklace of Raindrops by Joan Aiken – those gorgeous magical stories that create and nurture readers. The Huntress: Sea is Sarah’s debut novel, the first in a trilogy. Sarah was born in West Sussex, where she still lives close by the sea, with her street-wise ginger cat and her miniature lop-eared bunny.

seaSea by Sarah Driver, published by Egmont

Ever since Ma died, Mouse has looked after her little brother, Sparrow, dreaming of her destiny as captain of The Huntress. But now Da’s missing, Sparrow is in danger, and a deathly cold is creeping across the world.

skySky by Sarah Driver, published by Egmont

The trail of the Storm-Opals takes Mouse further than she has ever been before. With her little brother Sparrow and friend Crow alongside her, she stumbles into the world of Sky, where fortresses are hidden amongst the clouds, secret libraries (skybraries) nestle atop gigantic icebergs and the sky swirls with warring tribes and their ferocious flying beasts. Can they solve Da’s message before it’s too late for their ship, their tribe and the whole of Trianukka?

Sarah’s books can be borrowed for any of our libraries by visiting our library catalogue:  https://wokingham.spydus.co.uk/cgi-bin/spydus.exe/MSGTRN/OPAC/BSEARCH
