Deadline Extended for Young Volunteers at Wokingham Borough Libraries

Young Volunteers Needed To Support Council’s Summer Reading Challenge

We are looking for volunteers, aged 16 to 24 with a passion for reading, to help support local children taking part in our summer reading challenge from Monday 29 July to Friday 30 August 2019.

Successful volunteers, who will be based at Wokingham, Woodley and Lower Earley library, will require an interest in working with children as the role involves encouraging them to take part in and complete this year’s challenge, Space Chase.

Organised by charity The Reading Agency and the UK public library network since 1999, the summer reading challenge is the UK’s biggest annual reading promotion for children aged 4 to 11.

The challenge combines free access to books with fun, creative activities in the library during the summer holidays. Throughout the challenge, library staff and young volunteers will be on hand to support children, helping them to discover new authors and illustrators and to explore a wide range of different types of books and ways of reading.

Parry Batth, Executive member for leisure and environment said, “The summer reading challenge is a great way to encourage our young residents to continue reading throughout the holidays and help them to develop a love of reading at a young age. Last year over 3000 children took part throughout the borough and we hope to beat that record this year”.

“I would encourage all young adults in the borough with a passion for reading to sign up to assist us with this project. What a great way to give back to the community while gaining valuable work experience to be added to your CV.”

Volunteers will also help out with library duties and children’s activities and will receive full training prior to starting.

For more information about becoming a young volunteer this summer contact volunteer@wokingham.gov.uk or call 0118 974 6263.

Closing date is Saturday July 6 with training session at Wokingham Library on July 15, Lower Earely Library on July 16 and Woodley Library on July 18.
