Winnie the Pooh day – January 18th

National Winnie the Pooh day is celebrated on the birthday of author A.A. Milne. Winnie the Pooh first appeared on the printed page in 1926, together with Piglet, Tigger and Eeyore.

Milne’s lovable Pooh Bear, as he was affectionately known, is a fictional bear inspired by a black bear named Winnie who lived at London Zoo during the World War I. The author’s son, Christopher Robin, would visit the bear often and named his own bear after him, and a swan named Pooh.

This friendship inspired the collection of books that were illustrated by E.H. Shepard. The character later starred in a series of much-loved Disney films. Milne’s stories have been translated into over 50 languages and are considered classic children’s stories today.

Woodley library has a lovely selection of A.A. Milne’s stories so why not snuggle up with your favourite Pooh fan, a pot of honey, and take turns reading about the adventures of Winnie the Pooh!

There is also a special Winnie the Pooh storytime at Woodley Library on Thursday 18th January from 3.45 until 4.15 for children aged 8 and under (£1 charge).
